Twitter Advantages and Disadvantages
Twitter is an important form of communication because it allows one to engage with a very large population and provide exposure for you as an individual. You can use twitter for business, product promotion and marketing, or in this day and age, one can be discovered from twitter. I have contacted businesses to get resolution quicker in a lot of times via twitter as opposed to calling them or emailing their customer service.
Twitter has influenced my industry in many ways. I have become more educated on various topics including local events, other peers in the same field, and new information coming out in my profession. I enjoy reading various perspectives on a situation or thought about current events to challenge my own thoughts and beliefs.
The benefit of using twitter is that although restrictive, the limited words in a post will assist with keeping people engaged. Many people do not stay engaged in long, drawn outposts. Many of the times after a post has more than 140 words, the message can get lost anyway. I feel another benefit is that the population that you can reach is endless and unexpected. You may want to promote to a different or specific demographic in your head, but twitter will allow you to reach a group of individuals you never expected to reach.
The disadvantages are that even though twitter is free and open to millions of users, there is plenty of spam and inappropriate content that you can get engaged in. You can also easily get opened up to being hacked on twitter as many accounts have been successfully hacked and unrecovered. Another disadvantage is you have to study the right time to post and ensure you post enough to keep your population engaged. When reading and contributing to twitter, it is important to make sure your content is relevant. It may be difficult to keep track of the various rules that go along with using twitter. Some of which I found from a SlideShare that displays some of the rules of twitter are also a disadvantage to keep up with as well.
